About us
April 2023 – Press Release
Stonehouse Tennis Club to open up to the public for the first time as part of the National Garden Scheme – and you can travel there by boat!
It's one of Plymouth's best kept secrets – a walled haven of seclusion that encloses lawn tennis courts, with gorgeous gardens and one of the best views in Britain overlooking Plymouth sound. Stonehouse Lawn Tennis Club is a private club that offers membership to the residents of the Stonehouse community and is run entirely by volunteers. With membership costing just £24 per year for adults and just £5 for children the club's aim is to be inclusive not exclusive.
This oasis of calm is opening it's doors on the 13th & 14th May 2023 and the club is encouraging visitors to make a day of it and take the ferry with Plymouth Boat Trips from the Barbican to Royal William Yard and walk the short distance to the Club, enjoying historic sites, views and restaurants.
The entry fee to come and see the wonderful gardens is £5 per adult and children are free, refreshments will be available, with all proceeds going to the National Garden Scheme charities such as MacMillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie, Hospice UK, Carers Trust, The Queen's Nursing Institute and Parkinson's UK. You can also enjoy the sounds of SeaChanges who will be playing on each day from 12 noon till 3pm.
The gardens have been extensively re-planted over the last 5 years and contain sub-tropical plants such as echium, paulonia and geranium maderense
Chris Stratford, Gardening Co-ordinator at the Club commented "All of the members of the club have been working hard and volunteering their time to Gardening Saturdays to make sure the Club looks the best it can. We are so pleased to be able to open our doors to everyone and cannot wait to be able to share our little piece of heaven with those visitors. We have Plymouth Boat Trips and Mount Edgcumbe Country Park as partners, helping us make these visits truly memorable"
After visiting the beautiful gardens there is a great opportunity to visit the local area and maybe enjoy a bite to eat somewhere at the Yard before catching the ferry back to the Barbican. A great day out for all of the family and supporting the NGS charities.

Notes to Editor
The Club
• Stonehouse Lawn Tennis Club is a private club for the whole Stonehouse community, it is not a charity.
• The grounds are leased from The Edgcumbe estate at a reduced rent
• The club generates its income solely from membership fees and fundraising events.
• Almost a hundred years ago the then Lord Edgcumbe had a winter villa looking out over The Sound behind where the clubhouse stands now.
• When he moved across the water into Cornwall he leased the villa's gardens and tennis courts to the Stonehouse community on condition that the club offered everyone living nearby the opportunity to enjoy the grounds, gardens and sporting facilities.

National Garden Association
• The NGS has become one of the most significant funders of nursing in the UK donating over £67 million to nursing and health charities
• Garden visits help change lives and in 2022 garden openings allowed NGS to give £3.11million to beneficiary charities.
