About us
KARST is an independent contemporary art space located in the heart of Millbay, Plymouth, and is recognized as the largest independent gallery in South West England. With an international reputation for its dynamic and innovative programming, KARST features a public gallery alongside a complex of artist studios.
Founded in 2012, KARST emerged from the momentum of the 2011 British Art Show 7, driven by a vision to make contemporary art accessible to all. The organization is dedicated to creating an environment where artists and curators can experiment, provoke thought, and challenge conventional boundaries. As a hub for artistic exploration, KARST engages diverse audiences through a variety of events, including exhibitions, film screenings, music performances, and live art.
Over its first decade, KARST has successfully hosted more than 120 exhibitions and projects, collaborating with over 400 artists and curators. In 2022, it proudly served as one of the venues for the British Art Show 9 in Plymouth, further solidifying its role in the contemporary art landscape.
KARST is committed to inclusivity and actively works to address social inequalities through its programming and community engagement. As a registered charity and an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation, it collaborates with various cultural organizations to support the artistic growth of Plymouth and the surrounding region.
