January can be a tough month, there’s the weather, the post-holiday blues and the pressure of New Years resolutions. But don’t worry, we have some great ideas of things to do in Plymouth which will help you to beat the January blues!

Meeting friends

Sometimes, a good coffee with a friend is all it takes to lift your spirits. You can have a brew with a view at The Terrace or try a delicious flat white with brunch at Rockets and Rascals. If you’re in need of somewhere to warm up after a refreshing (but chilly) swim, try Hutong, located just outside the Royal William Yard near Firestone Bay

Sea swims

Cold water swimming offers plenty of benefits including reduced stress levels, improved mental health as well as offering a sense of achievement. Plymouth has a number of spots to swim, if you are looking for sandy shores, head to the nearby beaches of Mothecombe or Whitsand Bay. If you don’t have transport, swimming off The Hoe and Firestone Bay are equally as popular and offer stunning views across the sound.

It’s important to ensure you are doing this safely, for more information on open water swimming, visit the water safety page on the National Marine Park website.

Walks

Getting outside in winter can be tough, but spending time in nature can do wonders for your mood. Spending time outdoors can reduce stress, helping to make you feel more relaxed. Plymouth has its own trails app, offering guided walks that will show you everything from the scenic views of the sound to the history and heritage of Plymouth. We are also conveniently situated on the Southwest Coast Path, making it very easy for you to discover the coast and the stunning views that come with it. Additionally, there are plenty of other places to go, if you’d like to explore a woodland, head to either Saltram or Plymbridge. If you really feel like venturing out, head to Dartmoor and explore the wilderness of the moors.

Get creative

Creative activities can help ease feelings of low energy and sadness. Plus, they provide a sense of achievement and an outlet for emotions.  You could try doing a creative workshop at the Theatre Royal Plymouth,  Alternatively, if the stage is not your scene, you could try a artistic workshop at Ocean Studios. These activities are a great way to express yourself and distract from any winter blues.

Spend time with nature

Spending time in nature is a great way to escape from the stresses of daily life. You can sit for a while in the serene Elizabethan Gardens or take a stroll around Devonport Park. If being alone is not for you, why don’t you try and spend a little bit of time with some animals? Head to Dartmoor Zoo to see some exotic animals, or if you feel like getting up close you can even walk Alpacas at Mount Edgcumbe!

Fitness

Moving your body can be a great antidote to the January blues. If you are looking for something new, why not try yoga in the Market Hall’s 360 immersive dome or under the sharks at the National Marine Aquarium? Both offer a variety of classes throughout the year. Based in the Royal William Yard, Southwest SUP provides paddle boarding lessons and social meetups, letting you enjoy the outdoors while making new friends.

Relaxing experiences

Sometimes, the best way to beat the January blues is simply to relax and rejuvenate. Gaia Spa, located in the grand Boringdon Hall Hotel, offers a luxurious escape with a Finnish sauna, an infinity pool, and an herbal sauna. For something a little more adventurous, try Halogi in the Royal William Yard, where you can enjoy a wood-fired sauna experience in a converted horsebox and cool off in cold-water tubs – the perfect therapeutic mix of fire and ice!

Whatever you choose, Plymouth has plenty of ways to help you shake off the January blues and make the most of the winter months.
