Christmas is just around the corner, making it the perfect time to enjoy a magical evening on Plymouth’s waterfront. Take a stroll through the Barbican, enjoy the twinkling Christmas lights, stop for a warm drink, or indulge in a delicious meal made with fresh, local produce. Whatever you're in the mood for, the waterfront offers something to fill your evening with holiday cheer.

Enjoy the Barbican Christmas Lights

The Barbican will be lit up with dazzling Christmas lights from 16 November. Wander down the cobbled streets and take in the stunning illuminations—it’s the perfect way to get into the festive spirit!

Dine Out

There are plenty of delicious places to eat along the waterfront, each offering a variety of tasty meals. Nestled in the heart of Mayflower Marina, Jolly Jacks is a waterside bar and bistro serving fresh, sustainable dishes. Their Christmas set menu includes highlights like baked herb-crusted hake and a woodland mushroom nut roast. Pair this with a serene atmosphere, and you have the perfect seasonal meal.

If you're after something closer to the Barbican, try The Boathouse, just a short stroll from the Mayflower Steps. Specialising in fresh seafood caught by their own boats, their festive menu features tempting options like roasted seabass, mushroom and spinach Wellington, and a traditional turkey roast. For those looking to try something a little different, take a scenic walk along Devil’s Point and head over to Pho in the Royal William Yard. With food that warms the soul and stunning views over the marina, Pho offers vibrant, healthy Vietnamese dishes that are perfect for a cosy, flavourful experience.

Indulge in a Drink

The waterfront offers breathtaking views of the Sound, and walking along it is lovely. It’s the perfect spot to take a break and enjoy a drink or two while soaking in the scenery. The oldest working gin distillery in England, Plymouth Gin Distillery, is set in the heart of the Barbican and has its very own refectory bar. With its cosy interior and delicious drinks, it’s an ideal place to pause and relax between admiring the Christmas lights. If you’re in the mood for something a little different, Hook & Line at Royal William Yard features a rum bar inspired by the area’s naval history. Serving up an excellent selection of rums, their drinks range from traditional favourites to creative twists, ensuring there’s something for everyone.

On a cold winter’s day, one of the best ways to warm up is with a comforting hot drink. Fortunately, Plymouth’s waterfront is home to several intimate cafés perfect for just that. With stunning views over Plymouth Sound, The Terrace Café is a standout. Recently refurbished, it offers a wide selection of hot beverages, making it the ideal spot to enjoy a warm drink while taking in the magnificent waterfront views—an experience you won’t want to miss.

Explore the NSPCC Festival of Trees

This fantastic festive event is back again this year in support of the incredible NSPCC. You can see the sparkling trees in three different venues along the waterfront:

  • *Plymouth Pavilions

  • Ocean Studios, Royal William Yard

(*Please note: you will need a valid ticket to enter these venues to see the trees.)

Many of the local and independent shops are also supporting the NSPCC this Christmas with magical displays in their windows. See how many you can find, and tag Plymouth Waterfront Partnership #Festivaloftrees on Facebook.

Don’t forget to support the important work of the NSPCC by scanning the QR codes in the stores to donate.
