Category: Things to do

As the cold weather truly begins to arrive in Plymouth, it’s easy to feel a little bit down. However, this season presents a great opportunity to prioritise your wellness and mental health. From fun outdoor activities to relaxing wellness events, there are plenty of ways to take care of yourself during the colder months.

Cold water swimming

Cold water swimming offers numerous benefits, including relief from aches and pains, reduced stress levels, and improved mental health. Fortunately, Plymouth is home to some gorgeous swimming spots. The Hoe is a popular choice year-round, often frequented by early swim clubs and paddle boarders. Firestone Bay offers you the opportunity to swim in the sea, or take a dip in the shallow tidal swimming pool.  If you are looking for something a little quieter, Mount Batten Bay offers beautiful views of Plymouth in a relatively secluded setting. You can also explore local beaches like Bovisand and Mothecombe to enjoy.

It’s incredibly important to do this safely, for more information on open water swimming visit the National Marine Park website.

Walks

It can be challenging to venture outside when the weather is grey and miserable, but getting out and connect with nature can massively benefit your mental health. Spending time outside can boost your mood, reduce stress, and help you feel more relaxed.

The South West Coast path is an ideal way to soak in the stunning views of the Plymouth Sound while you unwind. Additionally, there are other many beautiful places to walk, such as Plymbridge Woods, Saltram House and Dartmoor National Park.

If you are seeking more inspiration, check out the Plymouth Trails App, which offers a variety of routes throughout the city.

Outdoor activities

Plymouth offers a wide range of wellness activities that take place outside to help you rejuvenate. Revitalise your senses with Hálogi. Located in the Royal William Yard, you can enjoy ice baths and a wood-fired sauna - perfect for refreshing both body and mind. Also in the Royal William Yard, South West SUP provides paddle boarding lessons and social meet-ups, allowing you to soak up the outdoors whilst making new friends.

For family-friendly fun, the Mount Batten Watersports and Activities Centre is open year-round, offering a variety of water-based activities like kayaking and sailing. If you're looking for something a bit different to do with the family, consider the alpaca experience at Mount Edgcumbe. Get up close and personal with the fluffy animals while enjoying a leisurely walk. If you'd prefer to explore without the walking, hop on a Beryl Bike! With the option to hop on and off whenever you like, you can see the city from a fresh perspective.

Spas

Escape to a tranquil sanctuary and give your body and mind the rest they deserve. Plymouth and its surroundings boast several spas that provide soothing experiences.

Gaia Spa, set within the elegant Boringdon Hall Hotel, features a range of facilities including a Finnish sauna, a crystal salt steam room, and a hydrotherapy room, making it an ideal spot to unwind and calm your mind. Just across the bridge, China Fleet offers its aqua spa, which is equipped with experience showers, saunas, and aroma steam rooms to help relieve the stresses of the day.

Fitness

Fitness is a great way to de-stress, but it can sometimes feel challenging. Why not opt for something a little more enjoyable and relaxing? The Market Hall hosts yoga sessions beneath the Northern Lights, providing a calming atmosphere for you to fully unwind. Alternatively, you can immerse yourself in a rejuvenating yoga session set against the stunning backdrop of the Eddystone Reef at the National Marine Aquarium.

Arts and Crafts

Another wonderful way to de-stress is by keeping your hands busy. After a lovely walk along The Barbican, consider stopping by ClayArt for a fun and creative experience with friends, where you can craft a unique keepsake. If you’re looking to try something a bit different, head over to Ocean Studios in the Royal William Yard for pottery-making classes. Whilst there, why not try some of the delicious food at one of the restaurants there? The fish and chips at The Hook & Line are divine!

Food & drink

Sometimes, catching up with friends over a drink is exactly what you need. For a fun twist, consider taking a tour at the Plymouth Gin Distillery, or, if you are after something a little more intimate, head across the road to The Bottling Plant.

Plymouth also boasts a variety of delicious dining options. Jolly Jacks, located in the heart of Mayflower Marina, offers a relaxed atmosphere with stunning waterfront views - perfect for a friendly catch-up. Alternatively, The Boathouse is a stone’s throw away from The Barbican and is a great spot to enjoy something tasty while soaking the vibrant surroundings.
