On a student budget and looking where to eat for cheap in Plymouth? The city is full of fantastic food options patiently waiting to be tried, from local favourites such as The Early Bird and Cap’n Jaspers to flavours from around the world like Turtle Bay. Check out some of our top picks that will satisfy your taste buds without breaking the bank.

                   

The Early Bird

The Early Bird Café has two locations in Plymouth, both are equally well suited to students at the city centre campus. The cafes on Mayflower Street and Mutley Plain both serve delicious delights ranging from smashed avocado to delicious stacks of pancakes.

It’s the perfect place to catch up with friends over coffee and food or the perfect place to study with free WIFI available. With over 20 different fresh cakes and homemade bread to buy there is something for everyone.    

                 

The Roundabout

A stone’s throw away from the city centre campus, The Roundabout offers food and drink all day. From wings on Wednesdays, to pancakes on Thursdays, there’s plenty to choose from. On your first visit, if you download the app, you get a free non-alcoholic or alcoholic drink on them. If you’re into sports, they also have lots of screens playing football and rugby regularly.

                 

Turtle Bay 

Turtle Bay is a Caribbean restaurant and bar that offers bold and flavoursome food. From spicy goat curry to sumptuous waffles, the menu is extensive as well as reasonable. They offer monthly deals to students like 20% off or £10 vouchers. It’s the ideal destination to enjoy food and drink with your friends and get a taste of the Caribbean. If you’re feeling fancy, they offer a bottomless brunch experience which is for two hours allowing guests to have unlimited drinks and a meal.

                    

Plymouth Market

Plymouth Market has over 150 stalls and has been a market since 1253. It has a variety of stalls but also offers lots of food and beverages. With discounts and promotions, it is an ideal choice for students. It has something for everyone’s food pallete. A taste of Thailand, Nepalese street food, Korean, sandwich bars, pasta pots and waffles can all be enjoyed here. 

                   

Cap n’ Jaspers

Located on Plymouth’s historic Barbican, the iconic Cap n’ Jaspers is the perfect place to try if you are a fan of burgers. Open from 7:30am until midnight Cap n’ Jaspers caters for various needs such as breakfast for morning walkers or providing post-drinks food options. With a history dating back to 1978, they specialize in preparing and making burgers right in front of you. With prices starting at £3.60 it’s an mouthwatering option that won’t strain your budget.

                         

Cosmic Kitchen 

Cosmic Kitchen is a vegan family-run restaurant in the heart of Plymouth. All their food is 100% plant-based whether you’re vegan all the time or just interested in trying vegan food, it’s the place to go. They are focused on providing nutritious, flavorful and affordable food. The ideal location if you’re bored of having meals like super noodles and need some filling nutrition.

                  

The Snack Box

Snack Box is a café where you will find Breakfast items lunch and light bites. It has vegan and gluten-free options. The café is in the city centre and has an extensive menu including full English breakfast, jacket potatoes and salads. With the most expensive item being £6 it’s an offer you don’t want to miss. Meaning not only will your stomach be thanking you, but your bank account will be too!

                

Plymouth Stable 

Enjoy sourdough pizza and cider by the waterside on The Barbican at the Plymouth Stable. Their thin crust pizza is delightful and even better when paired with a pint of west country cider. However, if you're wanting to try out a range of ciders, you must try the Stable's signature Cider Tasting Board which features five 1/3 pints of cider varying from still, sparkling, fruity or traditonal flavoured.

                        

Salumi Bar & Eatery

The Salumi Bar & Eatery cater for everyone from takeaway food if you’re in a rush to a nice hearty, cooked Sunday lunch if you’re missing the home-cooked meals when away from uni. They have a lunch menu where you can get 3 courses for £19, two for £16 or one for £12 depending on your appetite or budget. They also have a selection of gluten-free and vegan options available.

                     

Toby Carvery

Close to the Marjons Campus is Toby Carvery. Toby Carvery offers the perfect British roast if you’re craving a warm and homely meal. With succulent meats, fresh veggies, and crispy Yorkshires.

They offer a buffet style so you can keep going up and refill your plate the perfect place to go if you have little food left in your cupboards and are feeling hungry. The venue also has a variety of discounts for students meaning you can go out and enjoy your food and not have to worry about the digits in your bank.

                       

Nibana 

A handy option for students at Marjon University is Nibana. Nibana is an Indian restaurant and takeaway that offers a variety of traditional Indian cuisines such as curries, biryanis, nan bread and vegetarian options.

The dishes are full of rich flavours and aromatic spices. You can enjoy the food in the restaurant or from the comfort of your accommodation with your flatmates. The Indian is award-winning so it’s a must to try.

                      

Wildwood 

Fancy pizza, pasta or grilled food, Wildwood is the place to go. With 50% discount on all food for students from Sunday till Thursday. It’s perfect if you have no motivation to cook or fancy a catch-up with friends. They offer a lunch menu with two courses for £11.95 and 3 for £14.95. Located at the Royal William Yard and in the city centre, there’s lots to do there after your meal. They also offer a delivery option on UberEATS which is perfect if you don’t have time to cook and have project deadlines approaching. 

                  

Wagamama

Wagamama offers fresh Asian food inspired by the flavours of Japan.

Wagamama’s Plymouth is the ideal choice for both a quick snack and a leisurely dining experience. You also don’t want to miss their extensive cocktail menu it's a great place to have a few drinks before hitting the town. Wagamama caters for everyone with a vegan menu, gluten-free menu and a menu where dishes can be altered depending upon your allergies. They also have a campaign which is for university students called Noodle Union where they offer regular discounts and offers if you join.

                  

Jacka Bakery 

Located on The Barbican, Jacka Bakery is the oldest working bakery in the UK. They create delicious baked goods and breads that are out of this world. With affordable prices, everyone can come down and try them. The bakery is immensely popular and has great reviews across the board. It’s recommended to arrive early in order to secure the best choice from the daily selection.

                  

Harbourside

Harbourside is a fish-and-chip restaurant amongst all the hustle and bustle of the Barbican. It has an extensive Fish & Chips menu with gluten-free and Vegan options available. You can enjoy fish and chips, burgers, pies, chicken nuggets, sausages and halloumi.

You won’t have to worry about breaking into your overdraft as everything on the menu is under £10. So if you’re on a budget and want to treat yourself while having a harborside walk it’s the perfect place.

You can also click and collect your food to miss the long queues during the summertime. Being a student in Plymouth it is highly recommended to try the traditional fish and chips. However, if you’re not a fan of fish, they also offer extensive vegan and vegetarian options. 

                     

The Dock 

The Dock is a modern restaurant situated at King Point Marina Millbay. 

With floor-to-ceiling windows and balconies, it has amazing coastal views making it a great opportunity for insta. They offer a variety of dining options including breakfast, lunch, dinner, vegan dishes, drinks, coffee and cake. Open seven days a week from 8 am till 8:30 pm it’s the ideal place to celebrate a special occasion like passing a university assignment.
