Looking for something to do this weekend? Why not head to The Box, the city’s award-winning museum, art gallery and archive, where there are loads of things to discover, experience and enjoy.

The Armada Portrait of Queen Elizabeth I

See a famous portrait of a famous Tudor Queen….. This beautiful painting which is packed with symbolism is on loan to The Box throughout 2023 from The Woburn Abbey Collection. See it on display in the ‘100 Journeys’ gallery alongside historic materials relating to Sir Francis Drake and new interpretation that will really make you think.

Making a Mark: Dazzling Drawings from the Cottonian Collection

Get up close to over 50 drawings made 300-500 years ago showing portraits, landscapes, animal studies, city views and scenes from epic stories. They’re all part of The Box’s Cottonian Collection, a nationally significant collection of paintings, sculpture, rare books, furniture, ceramics, prints and of course, drawings. See if you can spot some famous names like Rubens and van Dyck, as well as a work that may have been drawn by the great Leonardo da Vinci.

Get creative in the ‘Making your Mark’ space at the far end of the gallery where there are large sheets of paper, clipboards and pencils for you to use.

Sue Williamson: Between Memory and Forgetting

There’s a quiet power to this exhibition in St Luke’s church – the first ever museum exhibition by British-born South African artist and activist Sue Williamson. She’s spent the last forty years highlighting the stories of South African women whose achievements have been overlooked.

Take a look at a new sculpture inspired by an obelisk on Plymouth Hoe and see wonderful photographic and mixed media portraits – including one of Winnie Mandela. Why not write a message about an important or influential woman in your life on the boards in the gallery before you leave?

Plenty to see and do

The spring season at The Box also includes an exhibition of highly detailed drawings, etchings and film by London-based artist duo, Hannah Quinlan and Rosie Hastings (who also have an exhibition on display at Tate Britain at the moment!).

You can also see a fantastic presentation of landscape paintings, artworks by female artists including Plymouth favourite Beryl Cook, textiles, ceramics, craft and silver in the ‘People and Place: Art Collection Showcase’. The hugely popular Newlyn School painting, ‘A Fish Sale on a Cornish Beach’ by Stanhope Forbes is also on display just outside the Mammoth gallery.

Anyone fancy a cronut?

Have you ever tried a cronut? It’s a delicious cross between a doughnut and a croissant and we’d definitely recommend it! Why not sample one for yourself by calling in to The Little Box café on Tavistock Place where they're on sale thanks to a new partnership with Rise Bakery?

The Box is open 10am to 5pm Tuesday to Sunday and selected Bank Holidays throughout the year. Admission is free and there’s no need to book. The Little Box café is open from 9.30am to 3pm Tuesday to Sunday.
