The Four Seasons, The Drum, 17 – 19 November 2022
James Wilton Dance, one of Europe’s most in demand dance companies, presents The Four Seasons. Using Max Richter’s recomposed version of Vivaldi’s seminal work, The Four Seasons James Wilton Dance has created a work of immense physicality, driving energy and sweeping beauty. The work features the companies signature blend of capoeira, acrobatics, martial arts and classical dance, alongside stunning stage and costume designs.
This abstract, yet honestly human choreography relates each of the four seasons of the musical composition to the four stages of the universe, creating a kaleidoscopic visual feast for audiences that is not to be missed. James Wilton Dance was founded in 2010.
James Wilton has created works for Scottish Dance Theatre, Konzert Theater Bern, Theater Münster, Opera Graz, Ballet Hagen, Staddtstheater Braunschweig and dance company Giessen and has choreographed a work for 50 professional dancers for performances at Millennium and Wembley Stadiums (reaching over 110,000 people in the process).
Strictly Ballroom, The Lyric, 30 January – 04 February 2023
Based on Baz Luhrmann’s award-winning worldwide film phenomenon, Strictly Ballroom: The Musical is heading out on a brand-new UK and Ireland tour starring Strictly Come Dancing favourite Kevin Clifton and BBC’s Eastenders’ Maisie Smith!
Directed and co-choreographed by Britain’s best loved TV Judge, Craig Revel Horwood, Strictly Ballroom: The Musical follows arrogant, rebellious young ballroom dancer, Scott Hastings (Kevin Clifton). Dada Masilo’s The Sacrifice, The Lyric, 28 February – 01 March 2023
South Africa’s award-winning Dada Masilo wowed critics and audiences with her stunning re-imagining of Giselle in 2019. Now back by popular demand, Masilo and her company of incredible dancers return with the UK premiere of The Sacrifice.
Featuring live music on stage, The Sacrifice is inspired by Igor Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring, combining the European heritage of this monumental piece of music with the uniquely rhythmic and expressive movements of ‘Tswana’, the traditional dance of Botswana. Rooted in story-telling and healing ritual, Masilo and her dancers deliver an exhilarating performance that will transport you through a journey of emotions.
Birmingham Royal Ballet’s Swan Lake, The Lyric, 15 – 18 March 2023
Ballet’s greatest love story returns in Birmingham Royal Ballet’s lavish production. This romantic fable of ill-fated passion, powerfully illuminated by Tchaikovsky’s legendary score played live by the Royal Ballet Sinfonia, has bewitched audiences for generations.
By a moonlit lake, a grieving prince witnesses the transformation of a swan into a beautiful princess. Compelled by an evil spell to spend her days in the form of a bird, she can only be saved by the power of love.
Filled with exquisite ensembles, lyrical pas de deux and bravura solos, this Swan Lake is atmospheric, romantic and beautiful – an unforgettable experience.
Peaky Blinders: The Redemption of Thomas Shelby, The Lyric, 28 March – 01 April 2023
A new dance theatre event, delving into the story of Tommy Shelby and the Peaky Blinders, written by the creator of the global hit television series.
Dazzling, athletic dance and stunning dramatization, with an iconic eclectic Peaky soundtrack, and a live on-stage band.
Tommy and the Peakys fought together at Flanders and the show opens in the trenches. Bound by this experience, a really personal story unfolds as the Shelby family navigate the decisions that determine their fate and Tommy is intoxicated by the mysterious Grace.
Plymouth is easily accessible by train with a wide range of services running from a variety of locations within England. Although some services may require a change or two.
