It’s the last weekend of dry January, need a bit of motivation? Get out and about for a nice walk with family or friends, eat some delicious grub or watch a film. There's plenty of things to enjoy here in Plymouth in the cold winter months.
Walk with stunning views
Not only do we have the stunning views across Plymouth Sound from the Hoe, but there are also plenty of gorgeous countryside and woodlands to explore within easy reach, including Ham Valley and Plymbridge Woods. Use the ferry links to access Mount Batten, Mount Edgcumbe or Cawsands. Plus we’ve got Dartmoor National Park right on our doorstep. Walking is the perfect way to explore the outdoors whilst getting some great exercise.
Ever thought about giving running a go?
You can get fit without spending a penny! The couch to 5k is a great place to start, and Plymouth has an abundance of great places to give it a go. Here are a few suggestions: Saltram, Plym Valley, or one of the many parks including the largest in Plymouth - Central Park. Take in the sea air from Mount Batten and try running out to the pier. You may feel inspired to enter Britain's Ocean City Running Festival, on 19 June 2022, encompassing the Half Marathon, 5K and 10K.
Watch a film
After all that exercise, relax and enjoy Plymouth's only independent cinema, Plymouth Arts Cinema, where this weekend you can watch: A Hero (12A), Directed by Asghar Farhadi. This Cannes Grand Prix-winning drama is showing from Friday 28 January to Wednesday 2 February.
Taste French Cuisine
Book a weekend meal at the charming and friendly Bistrot Pierre located in Royal William Yard.
Inspired by travels around France their menus combine bistrot classics with new seasonal dishes including the popular Steak-frites and crème brûlée, as well as lighter salads and fresh fish dishes. Every day they also offer a Prix Fixe set menu with two /three courses for £12.95/£14.95 featuring Bistrot favourite dishes.
Look forward to the summer
Plymouth has got some awesome outdoor live music events happening this year, with something to suit all tastes. From One Big Summer from 2 to 4 June on Plymouth Hoe, to Paloma Faith on 9 July and Simply Red on 10 July, at Cottage Field, Central Park. Take a look and get booked up!
Plymouth is easily accessible by train with a wide range of services running from a variety of locations within England. Although some services may require a change or two. Travelling from London takes around 3 hours with Great Western Railway, if you're coming from the north, the trip from Manchester can take 5 hours 15 minutes. We recommend using GWR.com to search for the fastest and best route for your journey, and book in advance for the best price.
Alternatively, the recently renovated Night Riviera Sleeper service runs Monday – Friday and Sunday evenings. Visit gwr.com/sleeper for more details on times and how to book.
