January can really drag sometimes – especially the long wait until payday! If you’re feeling the pinch this month, here are five free or inexpensive things you can enjoy in Plymouth this weekend…

Hunt for dinosaurs in Central Park

Get out in the fresh air and explore Plymouth’s biggest park with the help of the free Love Exploring app, available to download for free. There’s two games to play that kids will love – set off on a dinosaur-hunting adventure or learn all about space. If you’re looking for a new walking route, there’s also a Sculpture Trail or Nature Walk that you can follow.

Learn about the Mayflower story

You’ll find the Mayflower Museum on the Barbican, with three floors offering a fascinating insight in the Pilgrims’ famous journey across the ocean. Open on Saturday from 10am to 4pm, entry is just £3.50 for adults and £2 for children.

And don’t forget – the National Marine Aquarium is just a short walk away, so if you’ve visited in the last 12 months why not make it a full day out and use your Complimentary Pass to return again for free.

Catch the Cremyll Ferry

Hop aboard the ferry from Plymouth and enjoy a walk around Mount Edgcumbe, with ferry tickets costing just £2 each way (£1 for kids). The crossing is an adventure in itself and on the other side, there’s miles of stunning Cornish countryside to roam through.

Explore The Box

Standard entry to The Box is free, so take the family along to meet Mildred, the lifesize woolly mammoth replica, or gaze up in awe at the 14 ship’s figureheads suspended from the ceiling.

The current major exhibition at The Box, Songlines: Tracking the Seven Sisters, is also free for Plymouth City Council taxpayers on their first visit – so if you haven’t been, it’s a cheap day out!

Stretch your legs at Saltram

One of Plymouth’s most popular walking spots, if you’re a National Trust member then a visit to Saltram is completely free. If you’re not, then you only need to pay for parking to enjoy a walk around the beautiful park grounds.

Plymouth is easily accessible by train with a wide range of services running from a variety of locations within England. Although some services may require a change or two.

Travelling from London takes around 3 hours with Great Western Railway, if you're coming from the north, the trip from Manchester can take 5 hours 15 minutes.

Alternatively, the recently renovated Night Riviera Sleeper service runs Monday – Friday and Sunday evenings. Visit gwr.com/sleeper for more details on times and how to book.

We recommend using GWR.com to search for the fastest and best route for your journey, and book in advance for the best price.
