From wild swimming spots to outdoor pools, Plymouth's got your summer swims covered. Kick-start summer by taking a dip at one of our top five. Just remember to follow safety advice and do your research on tides and currents if you're swimming in the sea.
Tinside Lido
Tinside's salt water pool opens for the summer months, offering breath-taking views of Plymouth Sound, charming 1930s Art Deco vibes and a sun deck so you can work on your tan in between lengths.
Check opening times and book here.
Mount Wise Pools
There are three pools for you and your family to enjoy at Mount Wise – a 25m main pool, a fun pool with fountains, stepping stones, a whirlpool and a bubble pool, and a smaller pool for children to paddle in and build their confidence in the water. The pools are open between May and September every year, and one of Plymouth's hidden gems. The best bit of all? They're free to use, too!
Firestone Bay
Firestone Bay behind Royal William Yard offers swimmers the best of both worlds. Opt to wild swim in the sea, or take your dip in the shallow tidal swimming pool, which gets topped up with fresh sea water every time the tide comes in.
Firestone is an official swim zome marked by yellow buoys, which means that boat traffic has to adhere to speed limits to enter the zone.
Batten Bay
This secluded bay is just round the corner from Mount Batten Pier and it's a great spot for a swim, with views across the Sound and Drake's Island. You can also snorkel here; Plymouth's National Marine Aquarium is running weekly Saturday Snorkel Safari sessions at Batten Bay all summer.
Bovisand Beach
Located within the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Bovisand is popular with locals and perfect for swimming or snorkelling. There's a seasonal ban on dogs, so leave your pooch at home between May and September, but bring the rest of the family because Bovi is a firm favourite with all ages.
