As the nights grow longer and the temperature drops, Plymouth’s event calendar will light up with a series of sparkling events throughout November.
Starting with Bonfire Night on 5 November, Plymouth Hoe will play host to the city’s biggest bonfire which is sure to warm you up on a cold winter’s night. The fire will be lit at 7.30pm and then a spectacular firework display will light up the skies from 8pm.
Begin to get into the festive spirit from 14 November, with Plymouth City Centre Christmas Lights Switch-on. Marking the start of late night shopping in the city, head to the Piazza to watch as the city centre is illuminated with beautiful lights. Local performers, choirs and bands will take to the stage to entertain the crowds, before the lights are switched on! Make sure to keep an eye out for the LEGO penguins who’ll be spreading their wings across the city centre in the lead up to Christmas too!
For all your Christmas shopping needs, Plymouth Christmas Market will return on 28 November (until 19 December). You’ll find traders from across the south west in log cabins, festooned with fairy lights, selling a huge range of perfect gifts – from foodie treats to handmade jewellery. The giant illuminated bauble will also return to the entrance of the market, on the Piazza, which will make the perfect backdrop for a festive family selfie!
And then, from 28 November to 1 December, light festival Illuminate returns to Plymouth’s waterfront, launching the Mayflower 400 commemorative year. Expect light projections, installations, performances and interactive activities that will enchant the whole family. This year, Illuminate is growing with festival activity on the Barbican and at Mount Edgcumbe, as well as at Royal William Yard. The weekend will culminate with the Barbican Christmas Lights Switch-on on 1 December, as Southside Street lights up for the festival season. Head down to Southside Street from 12pm for entertainment and children's activities, ahead of the switch-on at 5pm - watch out for the Grinch who will be roaming the streets looking for trouble!
Best of all? All these events are completely free to attend!
