About the Shanty Bands
The Pirates of St Piran are a rocky, rumbustious pirate band performing all over the West Country at festivals, pubs and pirate-themed events. We perform in our own unique style, dressed in traditional pirate costume. We are a non-profit band and every penny we make from our gigs and music sales goes to charity.
Based mainly in Bere Ferrers and Tavistock area and we have been enjoying performing in pubs, clubs and village halls in the Tamar Valley area for the past twenty years. Sometimes we have been known to venture out into Cornwall and Dorset, even up to London on one occasion. We mainly raise money for the RNLI and local charities. We have been regular supporters of the Plymouth Pirate Festival for many years, always enjoy performing there and look forward to another exciting event.
The Chudleigh Shantymen formed in 2014 from a group of old boys who would ‘ meet down the pub’ of a Friday evening to sing shanties. Their notoriety quickly spread throughout Chudleigh. The crew have performed at Plymouth Pirate Weekend, private parties and other local events. Their repertoire includes traditional sea shanties as well as songs of the sea written specifically for them. Crew members include an ex-RN CPO and another who went by sea under sail all the way to Australia - but most couldn’t manage a pedalo.
They have performed at various Pirate and Shanty Festivals from Falmouth to Gloucester, but since lockdown they have submitted videos and been involved on live feeds for virtual festivals further afield in Oban Scotland and on the east coast of America for “Weathering The Storm” and Canada for “Festival Des Pirates”, as well as recording music tracks being played on SoundCloud “Couleur Bleue Salee”. Garbed as Mermaid and Pirate, they have a strikingly different look as well as beautifully blended harmonies.
C.A.S.K fundraise for FND Friends, a charity which helps Kathryn to manage her Functional Neurological Disorder.
We were formed in September 2018. Consisting of 7 singers and 2 musicians who all come from a variety of backgrounds but come together for the enjoyment of singing and playing a range of music. We play Celtic, Folk, Cornish, Irish and everything in between.
We have performed at a number of events since our formation which we have greatly enjoyed and have turned into regular appearances throughout the westcountry.
We sing to raise money for charity and local causes which need as much support as they can get. 3 of our singers are active members of the Bude RNLI Lifeboat and 2 of our members are retired crew members.
The Great Sea Choir are a 45 strong mixed voice a cappella choir, known for their intricate and rhythmic arrangements and the high quality of their singing. Despite being a mixed-ability group of un-auditioned singers, the choir create an impressive and professional sound, brilliantly executing a wide range of folk music; from unique modern takes on traditional songs to textured, choral interpretations of contemporary music. Their sense of community, which is at the heart of what they do, shines through in their singing. This is a vibrant choir with a fresh take on folk arrangements, singing in up to eight-part harmony. Their songs are moving, exciting and delivered with passion.
The Out Of Tunas have been called the ‘bad boys of shanty’. They need no introduction! Their performances are becoming legendary and Iconic wherever they go.
I am a 24 year old Plymouth based Singer/songwriter. My songwriting style is acoustic and storytelling but I also enjoy covering jazz, folk and pop songs. I aim to create a cosy and relaxing atmosphere for my audience with songs inspired by Plymouth, the sea and quirks of everyday life.
Billy Ruffian are four young men from Plymouth who sing in close harmony. Songs of the sea, songs of the land and songs of the gutter.
Musical voyage with the Quartermasters, a folk band whose hamonious melodies and lyrics breathe life in to the ancient tales of their infections shanty rhythms and storytelling. The Quartermasters weave a maritime folklore that mesmorizes audiences.
Cat and Jon’s musical style has been described as 'dreamy catchy melodies that paint pictures in your mind' and 'John Lennon meets Laura Marling.’ Since summer 2023 they have released a double A-side (Firestone Bay & Summer Rain) inspired by our wonderful city Plymouth and the sea, a Christmas fundraising single (Other Side of Christmas) and a collaboration with the Scribes (Edge of Somewhere, Part 2). These songs were all featured on BBC Introducing and are available to stream by searching Cat Rose and Jon Fazal. This summer they are excited to release their debut EP together, a full EP with the Scribes later in the year and their own solo debut releases!
