Pirates Weekend is a hugely popular family event and is expected to attract thousands of visitors to the Barbican and Sutton Harbour during Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 May. However, we understand that some visitors may prefer to visit when there are fewer people around and if this is the case for you, the first hour of the event each day, between 10am and 11am tends to be a bit less busy.
The Barbican is the historic centre of Plymouth and as such most of the site is on cobbled ground with slab pavements.

Road closures during Pirates Weekend
There will be road closures on Southside Street from the junction of Vauxhall Street to the junction of Lambhay Hill from 9am to 4.30pm each day. Basket Ope will be closed from 7am on Saturday 18 May to 5.30pm on Sunday 19 May.
Two additional closures will take place on Sunday 19 May between 9am to 12pm to accommodate the Pirate Fun Run. These are Madeira Road from the bottom of Lambhay Hill to the mini roundabout of Hoe Road, and from here until the Citadel.
A temporary taxi rank will be set up outside the Basket Ope flats.
Bretonside Road near The Barbican will be closed in the inbound direction for the weekend due to emergency repairs. Drivers are advised to follow the signed diversions that are in place.
Take some time out in the garden area at the entrance to Basket Ope, where you’ll be able to soak in the sounds of Pirates Weekend while relaxing away from the hustle and bustle.
There are a number of registered safe spaces in the Plymouth area: A Safe Place offers help if someone is anxious, scared or at risk while they are out and about and need support. You can visit the safe spaces website for more information or speak with our steward and events team who will be identifiable by their hi-vis and lanyards.
Please visit the Barbican Tourist Information Centre opposite the Mayflower Steps if you have any questions. There will also be also stewards on hand to help at Pirates Weekend. They will be wearing yellow high viz tabards so please ask them if you have any questions.
If you’re looking for a spacious picnic area, cross the Sutton Harbour bridge on the Barbican, past the National Marine Aquarium and head towards Queen Anne’s Battery along Pilgrim Way leading to Commercial Place. This area is just 250m from the Barbican Tourist Information Centre.
