About us

200 years ago, the town of Plymouth Dock changed its name to Devonport – a change which has left a permanent record in the landscape in the form of Foulston's Devonport column in Ker Street.

Join archivist Claire Skinner in the Active Archives gallery to find out more about why the name change was needed, how Devonport celebrated its 'freedom from subordination' to Plymouth, and to view colourful archives and artefacts celebrating Devonport's unique identity as a place to live, work and play.
