Mayflower 400 bringing a new town crier for Plymouth
16th July 2019
Thirteen contestants will line up on the evening of 25 July at Plymouth Guildhall to compete for the position as Plymouth’s Mayflower 400 Town Crier.
The role will be dedicated to raising awareness of the Mayflower 400 year long programme of events and activities that will mark the 400th anniversary of this historic voyage to America.
A panel of six judges including Judi Spiers and Lord Mayor of Plymouth Councillor Richard Ball will pick the winner in the style of Britain’s Got Talent, and members of the public are invited to come along and join in the vote on the evening to help pick the best crier.
The Town Crier Competition, brought to life by 3 residents from The Hoe and funded by the Mayflower 400 Community Sparks cultural programme, starts at 7pm and entry is free. Plymouth Morris Dancers will entertain the audience outside the Guildhall from 6pm before the competition begins.
The entrants have been put through their paces in readiness for the evening by mentors, Dartmouth and Kingsbridge town criers Les Ellis and Roger Pinder. Les will also act as Master of Ceremonies for the evening.
The winner will have no time to rest on their laurels as they will jump straight into the International Town Crier competition in Devon on Friday 26, Saturday 27, and Sunday 28 July.
Mayflower 400 Community Sparks is a partnership project between Mayflower 400, Plymouth Culture, Plymouth City Council, The Box, Plymouth and Vital Sparks.
