Future-themed fun for the whole family at Lord Mayor’s Day

Lord Mayor’s Day returns to the city centre on Saturday 25 May welcoming the new Lord Mayor of Plymouth to the role.

This year, the family-friendly event is themed around science and the future, with a world of discoveries to be made and lots of scientific, technological happenings.

The star of the show this year is the eight foot tall Titan the Robot, who will be appearing on stage and in the Piazza twice during the day.

There’s a huge programme of entertainment planned including the ‘Planet Trail’, supported by the Plymouth City Centre Company. The trail will entertain children on a journey around the city centre with the chance to win amazing prizes including an Amazon Fire Kids tablet.

For an immersive experience, families can step inside the Science Dome to explore the surface of Mars and the Moon via the 360 degree projector, which uses real NASA surface terrain data, or try on the National Marine Aquarium’s Virtual Reality headset for a virtual dive around one of their tanks.

On the stage, visitors can enjoy performances from local dance and theatre groups and choirs including the Military Kids Choir.

There will also be lots of activities taking place on the Piazza and in Guildhall Square, including free circus skills workshops and appearances from the Plymouth Party Princesses. Two alien visitors will also be making a visit to Plymouth from outer space, interacting with young visitors using humour and physical theatre.

Community groups and charities will be showcasing the work they do in Plymouth with stalls set out along New George Street and Armada Way, alongside a number of food and craft stalls.

Councillor Pete Smith, Deputy Leader of Plymouth City Council, said: “Lord Mayor’s Day is a brilliant day out for the whole family, with lots of exciting activities for children of all ages to get stuck into and enjoy.

“But it’s also an important celebration of all the fantastic people, charities and groups in our city that work hard, supporting our communities and helping to make it a great place to live.”

As a new addition to this year’s event, free tours of the Council House will be given throughout the day by the Lord Mayor’s Macebearers. Visitors can discover more about this impressive building and the intriguing artefacts kept there, as well as learning all about the role of the Lord Mayor in Plymouth (advance booking required).

Councillor Richard Ball is currently Lord Mayor Designate and will be officially inaugurated as Lord Mayor of Plymouth on 17 May, ahead of the event. Councillor Terri Beer will be Deputy Lord Mayor for the year.
