Epic England launches audio trail in Britain's Ocean City with University of Plymouth
4th January 2019
Working in partnership with the University of Plymouth, award winning GPS-audio tour brand, Geotourist, is delighted to announce the launch of the Epic England walking trail around the city of Plymouth.
Bringing together a series of audio tours that ties together the history, geography, myths and legends of England on one audio-mapping platform for the first time, Geotourist welcomes the launch of phase one of Epic England.
Free for users, Geotourist is an open source platform and app that delivers audio tours to real-time visitor locations and provides an immersive audio guide of their current location. Working with nine world-class English DMOs and organisations, the Epic England stories are now pinned to the Geotourist digital audio map of the world for others to discover.
England’s southwestern coastline has played witness to many of the nation’s defining moments in history and Plymouth is dotted with important stories that have been digitally brought to life via the Geotourist audio app. From the much-loved and restored lido to the site of Drake’s bowling game at Plymouth Hoe, the city is home to a rich maritime history, acting as the final farewell point for the Pilgrims as they set out for the New World.
Through the Epic England audio tours, Geotourist and partners have captured these stories digitally and preserved them for today and tomorrow, protecting local content for generations to come.
The Epic England project capitalises on Geotourist’s already existing audio guide app technology and extensive network of partnerships with English tourist boards, destinations, attractions and organisations, as well as our extensive network of global digital audio tours.
The tours will help attract visitors by moving in-country visitors between English destinations, with the key aim of inspiring inbound tourism to the UK. Ultimately, Epic England has been developed to help visitors make the most out of their visit, delivering free-to-use tours via a free-to-download app and mobile site.
Shaon Talukder, CEO, of Geotourist said: “We are proud to deliver Epic England and we are delighted to be working with the University of Plymouth’s tourism students. To us at Geotourist, it is wonderful that the travel and tourism professional of the future is able to contribute in such a meaningful way to phase one of the Epic England project. Plymouth really is an exceptional city, which brings together culture, history and heritage. The Epic England tours are a collection of moments that stop you in your tracks when your brain makes a connection – scientifically, this is neural networking but to you and I, it’s that ‘Wow’ moment that stays with you. Sharable over social media, the Epic England tours can be listened to on location, or from anywhere in the world and be shared with family and friends, just like a postcard. The potential for global reach is undeniably real and simple.”
Rong Huang, Associate Professor In Tourism Marketing of University of Plymouth said, “University of Plymouth is very excited to take part in the Epic England campaign led by Geotourist. Our tourism students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels have developed and recorded elements of the programme in both English and Chinese languages. All students involved in this project originate from outside Plymouth but enjoy living and studying in the city. Their enthusiasm, professionalism and passion for Plymouth is clearly demonstrated in their work. As their module leader, programme lead and PhD supervisor, I couldn’t be more proud of their achievements. Plymouth is a wonderful place to study, to visit and to enjoy. Our students have done a brilliant job in presenting Plymouth through their recordings, we hope their guides will be a great help to those who visit Plymouth!”
