New waterfront café to offer Greek cuisine in Britain’s Ocean City
4th July 2018
Sutton Harbour’s historic Barbican Quarter is welcoming a new Greek café to Plymouth’s famous harbourside this week, serving up authentic Greek food including lunchtime wraps and breakfast items.
Situated in a prime position on Quay Point in Sutton Harbour near the Mayflower Steps, the Greek-inspired street food takeaway has been aptly named The Greek, and is scheduled to open today (Wednesday July 4).
The venue will specialise in Greek souvlaki wraps, consisting of chicken, pork or halloumi, salad and a choice of homemade sauces such as tzatziki. Customers will also be able to purchase breakfast wraps of halloumi, Greek ham and Greek sausage and a choice of sides such as fries, olives and freshly made dips.
In addition, The Greek will be serving local artisan ice cream from Cowlick Dairy, with some flavours featuring a Greek twist, and a range of hot and cold drinks including coffee from the Devon Coffee Company. The café has also submitted an application for a license to sell alcohol, such as Greek beer, wines and spirits, which is currently pending approval.
Next to the café, which formerly traded as the Real Food Kitchen, will be an al-fresco seating area where customers of The Greek can enjoy their food as they look out across The Marina at Sutton Harbour or over towards the Mayflower Steps and beyond to Plymouth Sound.
Café owner Andreas Kallis decided to open the Greek-inspired café after he realised there was nowhere else in Sutton Harbour or the surrounding area which offered a similar dining experience.
Andreas Kallis, owner of The Greek, said: “I decided to open The Greek to meet this gap in the market and offer Plymouth something new. The spot where we are opening is probably in one of the best places to be in Plymouth.
“We’re in a prime location right on the waterfront, in Sutton Harbour’s historic Barbican Quarter and just a few feet away from the famous Mayflower Steps, and we will be providing outdoor seating for our customers allowing them to enjoy the views across the harbour and out towards Plymouth Sound as they enjoy our delicious food.”
Mark Slade of Burton Knowles, the letting agents for Sutton Harbour Holdings plc, said: “We are delighted to announce that a new street-style takeaway will be opening in Sutton Harbour after we secured a new tenant for the unit based on Quay Point. The Greek is sure to be a popular choice for visitors to the harbourside, and will help us to further establish the historic waterfront district of Plymouth as a prime food and drink destination.
“We are also happy to hear that the owner, Andreas Kallis, has chosen to steer away from using plastic and will be stocking bio-degrading products where possible, helping the waterfront district maintain its Plastic Free Communities accreditation, and supporting our efforts to reduce the amount of litter in the harbour which constantly we work so hard to tackle.”
Visitors to Sutton Harbour will be able to enjoy freshly made authentic Greek street food from today. The takeaway will be open initially from 9am - 9pm, but these hours are seasonal and subject to change depending on demand.
