About us

The Devonport Naval Heritage Site and Visitor Centre records the development of the Dockyard and Devonport’s pivotal role in supporting the Royal Navy through war and peace, including two World Wars. Through its collections, interactive experiences and pictorial interpretation, the drama of the close relationship of Devonport, the Royal Navy, The Dockyard and the people of Plymouth can be explored.

The Heritage Site is made up of the following historic buildings, galleries and exhibits:

Reception and Café .

The Old Fire Station (1851) - Contains “The Age of Sail Gallery” which highlights the sailing navy and wooden shipbuilding in Devonport.  Highlights include a replica sailing ship gun deck, artefacts recovered from the wreck of HMS Coronation, which sank off Rame Head, and an exhibit highlighting the Royal Navy’s key role in stopping the slave trade during the 19th Century.  A separate gallery in the Old Firestation, covers the Royal Navy in the post war period, as well as displaying 2 magnificent figureheads.

The 18th Century Dockyard Superintendent’s and Pay Office - Contains the core of the Heritage Centre’s collection in 5 galleries:

The Warspite Gallery – tells the story of change from sail to steam and wood to steel.  The highlight is a 3metre long model of Devonport built battleship, HMS Warspite, which won 15 battle honours in 2 world wars.

The Devonport Gallery – tells the story of the Dockyard through both world wars.  It includes a panorama of the Battle of Jutland(1916) and a diorama of the Battle of the River Plate (1939), as well as the original shipwright’s model used to convert the large cruiser, HMS Glorious into an Aircraft Carrier.  Damage caused to the Dockyard during the bombing raids of WW2 is also covered.

The Courageous Gallery – Highlights submarines operating from Devonport and includes a fully working periscope as well as a 3D nuclear submarine virtual walk through display.
