About us

Based on the Old Testament prophet, Elijah, Mendelssohn's oratorio is a masterpiece in action packed musical storytelling and the choir look forward to welcoming you to their performance on Saturday 5 April, at 7.30pm in The Minster Church of St Andrew, Plymouth.

The choir are thoroughly enjoying rehearsals as the chorus takes on the roles of narrator together with that of the crowd of people and are immersed in the high drama of the tale. What is this gripping story about? Starting during a terrible drought, there is blame cast and a challenge between the false god Baal and God, concluded by fire descending from heaven. Turning to God, the people's prayers are answered with rain arriving to quench the parched land. The fury of Queen Jezebel, who worshiped Baal, forces Elijah into exile where he is dejected and feels a failure until consoled by angels. God's power is depicted with tempest, earthquake and fire. Spiritually strengthened Elijah returns to his task before departing to heaven in a fiery chariot.

Mendelssohn's wonderful music depicts every detail of this dramatic and compelling story with imaginative orchestration and beautiful arias. With thrilling, energetic choruses and hushed, reflective scenes the choir are delighted to be performing this much-loved work.

The choir are pleased to announce that Aiden Wu, a local student from Devonport High School for Boys, will be singing the part of The Youth. In addition, they will be welcoming four first class soloists who regularly have engagements with premier orchestras, choirs and opera companies in prestigious venues in this country and abroad: Soprano Catherine Hamilton, Mezzo-soprano Clare McCaldin, Tenor Robyn Lyn Evans and Baritone Thomas Humphreys.
