About us
On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the composition of 'Rhapsody in Blue' in January 1924, Musica Viva welcomes the 24-member London Gershwin Players and conductor Mark Forkgen in an upbeat All-Gershwin Evening featuring an Overture to the Musical 'Girl Crazy', 'Porgy and Bess', 'Fantasy', 'American in Paris', and a performance of 'Rhapsody in Blue' with Robert Taub, Director of Music at the University of Plymouth on piano in an original rarely-heard Paul Whiteman Band version on the song.
Both Mark Forkgen and Robert Taub particularly like this version, as it has a sharper edge and greater spontaneity compared to the more often performed large orchestral version. Gershwin composed 'Rhapsody in Blue' in a frenzied few weeks, and its first performance, a storied occasion with Gershwin himself at the piano, Stravinsky and other luminaries in the audience, was an immediate success.
