Programme
Haydn - String Quartet Op 50, no 5 in F, The Dream'.
Shostakovich - String Quartet no 7, Op 108.
Dobrzyński - String Quartet in E minor Op 7.
This Haydn Quartet, Op 50 no 5, is nicknamed 'The Dream'. Andrew told me an amazing story about this ... In 1982, the original autograph manuscripts of Nos 3 to 6 of the set, were discovered at a festival in Melbourne. After a concert, a woman presented the manuscripts, in a plastic shopping bag, to the conductor Christopher Hogwood. It emerged that the woman had inherited them, through successive generations, from an English colonel, who had purchased them in 1851. The colonel's heirs were unaware that they owned the only original versions of the quartets in Haydn's pen.
Dmitri Shostakovich composed this wonderfully powerful String Quartet No 7 in 1960, to the memory of his first wife Nina, who died in the year that she would have been 50. Of his many chamber works, this Quartet is Shostakovich's shortest string quartet and has no breaks in between movements.
We have found a most attractive work to play, by a virtually unknown composer, Ignacy Feliks Dobrzyński (1807-1867), He was, like his father, a pianist and composer. Born in Romanow in Poland, which is now in Ukraine, he first studied with his father, before going to the Warsaw Conservatory, where he was a classmate of Chopin's.
