Plymouth set to hold sparkling Bonfire Night
25th October 2023
Plymouth Hoe will be the backdrop to the city’s sparkling fireworks display on Bonfire Night this year.
Bonfire Night was set to be removed from the events calendar as part of last year’s budget savings unless a sponsor was found. A sponsor has been secured and it was announced at Cabinet on 11 September that the event is returning this year as a one-off, as part of the Council’s effort to support residents through the Cost of Living crisis, and the ‘fun for free’ strand of its Cost of Living Action Plan that has developed in order to support the health and wellbeing of residents.
The traditional Bonfire Night celebrations will start at 4pm on Sunday 5 November and the event will include fairground rides, catering stalls and a large bonfire which will be lit from 7.30pm. The night will round off with a spectacular fireworks display set off from the walls of the historic Royal Citadel from 8pm.
Deputy Leader of the Council Jemima Laing, and Cabinet Member for Children's Social Care, Culture, Events and Communications, said: “We are really pleased to be able to hold this event as a one-off this year.
“We want to help people enjoy themselves for free or at a low cost as the Cost of Living is impacting many Plymouth families. The event is free to attend with lots of fun things to do on the evening, it’s a great night out for families and it truly is spectacular.”
The Council’s Cost of Living Action Plan acknowledges the importance of fun and relaxation for people’s mental health and sense of well-being, as many families in the city are left with little or no disposable income.
Attending the event on Plymouth Hoe is also one of the safest ways to celebrate Bonfire Night, reducing the potential danger from private back garden bonfires and fireworks, relieving the burden on the emergency services during a particularly busy time, and helping to cut back on carbon emissions.
Parking in the area around the Hoe and the Barbican will be very limited and people are being advised to use city centre car parks, such as Western Approach or Theatre Royal is advised. Please note that bus and rail services will be operating Sunday timetables.
It's important to plan travel to the event in advance as there will be road closures around the area. Disabled parking will be available on the Hoe for those displaying a blue badge. This can be accessed via the Elliot Street entrance from 5.30pm and will end at 11pm.
