Blooming marvellous result for Plymouth waterfront at Britain in Bloom awards
10th October 2023
The Plymouth Waterfront Partnership team are celebrating after winning a silver award in this year’s BID category for the 2023 South West in Bloom initiative, a regional heat of the renowned Britain in Bloom competition. The prestigious competition, which is run by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), recognises communities across the UK for their efforts to improve their local environment through horticulture. This year, PWP’s entry to Britain in Bloom was supported by Ocean Group.
The sea-themed Plymouth waterfront entry was judged on a range of criteria, including floral displays, environmental projects, and business and community involvement.
The judges were particularly impressed by PWP’s theme and commitment to sustainability which included upcycled boats, crab pots and buoys used as planters courtesy of Plymouth Fisheries at Sutton Harbour; and the horticultural talents of the team at Sound Site Services and the Hoe Community Forum in creating floral themes that reflected the sea using recycled soil.
Jon Walton, CEO, Plymouth Waterfront Partnership:
“We are delighted to win silver this year as we have completely refocussed our entry to ensure we include new areas of our magnificent waterfront, improved sustainability and engaged more community and business partners than ever before. Huge thanks to the Ocean Group for their incredible support and to my colleague Kim for all her hard work in bringing this all together.”
Alice Duxbury, Group Marketing Manager Ocean Group said:
“It's been our pleasure to support the Plymouth Waterfront Partnership's entry into this year's South West regional heats for the prestigious Britain in Bloom competition. Sustainability and community are at the root of Britain in Bloom's ethos and align perfectly with the BMW and MINI own brands and core principles and growing message around electrification and how the BMW group are leading the way globally in recycling and conserving resources. Congratulations to Jon, Kim and all the teams involved in gaining the silver award."
Eight locations across the waterfront were given some flower-power this year as part of the award entry including installations at Bretonside, Southside Street, Mount Batten, West Hoe Park, Millbay Park and Royal William Yard.
The Britain in Bloom awards are a national competition that have been running for sixty years. They are designed to encourage communities to come together and create a better environment for everyone.
