Wondering around grave stones

Forget museums and take a guided tour around the 36 acres Ford Park Cemetery in the heart of Plymouth to learn about the rise and fall in fortunes for the City. Cemeteries are a microcosm of the history of the area in which they are situated, and this Victorian burial ground is a real gem. This natural green space offers flora and fauna all year round, with a stunning variety of trees. 

You will come away with an insight into how the Victorians grieved and honoured those who are laid to rest here and learn about the symbolism used to express their love and loss through their choice of memorial headstones The Grade 2 the listed Victorian chapel is beautiful in its simplicity and also has the only memorial of its kind in Plymouth, listing individually every civilian victim of the WWII bombing raids on the City. 

There is evidence all around the Cemetery of the bomb damage and human cost of the Blitz, as well as a reflection of Plymouth’s Maritime and Military history. There are graves of notable folk, with fascinating stories, and the second chapel often hosts an exhibition of historical interest. There is an opportunity to purchase homemade cakes and refreshments or even a Devon Cream Tea

• Tour timings and routes may be slightly adjusted on-site to avoid funeral services that may be taking place.
• Exclusive Tour with a knowledgeable local guide takes 2 hours usually at 10am or 2pm, but this can be adjusted.
