October is Black History Month, and there is lot's going on in Plymouth to mark the occasion. This year’s theme is reclaiming narratives, find out below how you can take part what’s happening in and around the city.

The Box

The Box is a free to visit award-winning museum. Over the next few weeks The Box are showing a series of film screenings linked to this year’s Black History Month. All of the screenings are free, with no need to book.

The Black History Month Hidden Figures of Plymouth walks take place on Saturday’s throughout October starting from The Box. You will be walked through the city and told about the captivating hidden stories of significant people of colour in Plymouth.

Plymouth Arts Cinema

Located in the centre, the Plymouth Arts Cinema is showing films written and directed by contemporary black filmmakers which explore the rich, complex and diverse experiences and histories of individuals and groups living in Britain and British Overseas Territories.

Snapshot: A short film programme turns the spotlight to Black girls who are coming of age on their own terms. Through these intimate explorations of their interior lives, joy is found in their adventures, in the refreshing variety of perspectives they have to offer, and in storytelling that simply lets Black girls be girls.

A Story of Bones tells the story of Annina van Neel's as she works to reclaim and honour the neglected history of St. Helena after the remains of thousands of formerly enslaved Africans are uncovered on the remote island.
