Five Fishy facts about Plymouth, Britain’s Ocean City

Award-winning artisan crisp brand Burts Chips has partnered with its Plymouth-based neighbour – premium seafood restaurant Rockfish owned by celebrity chef Mitch Tonks - for the launch of a brand new, limited edition Fish ‘N’ Chips flavour.

The new flavour hit shelves in June with an on-pack promotion for shoppers to win a fantastic meal at any 5 of the Rockfish restaurants including the newly refurbished Plymouth branch. Featuring flavours of freshly battered fish and crispy chip shop chips showered with a hint of lemon and vinegar, the limited-edition Fish ‘N’ Chips flavour is sure to be a big hit with crisp fans and will be available while stocks last.

Inspired by this great partnership here are five fishy facts you might not know about Plymouth…

Fact 1: The National Marine Aquarium, on Plymouth’s Sutton Harbour, is the UK’s largest public aquarium. The aquarium attracts around 300,000 visitors a year and is home to Britain’s deepest tank which holds 2.5 million litres of water! Part of the aquarium dates back over 100 years and is a great way to get close to some of the most unusual fish found in our oceans.

Fact 2: Research carried out by Plymouth University tackled the age-old belief that goldfish only have a memory span of three seconds and discovered they can remember as far back as three months!

Fact 3: Plymouth has the second largest fish market in the UK. They have had some record landings which have totaled a value of £19 million. Every day the market can receive up to as much as 60 tons of fish. In 2015 a £1.2 million ice production facility was built ensuring Plymouth fish market keeps up with the large scale landings received every day.

Fact 4: Plymouth is home to the UK’s best fish and chip shop takeaway. Kingfisher Fish and Chips, Plympton, Plymouth recently scooped the ultimate title “Independent Takeaway Fish and Chip shop of the Year” at the 2017 National Fish and Chips Awards in London.

Fact 5: Plymouth University’s Marine Institute is the first and largest institute of its kind in the UK. The building is a pioneer in the study of all things marine related and equipped with state of the art facilities such as the Ocean Wave Basin.
