The Box 

Plymouth's award-winning museum, art gallery, and archive, The Box, is just a short walk away from the city center of Plymouth. Housing incredible collections, including thousands of natural history specimens, amazing film and photography archives, and more, visiting is a fantastic way to spend a few hours diving into the depths of Plymouth’s history. Not only that, but The Box is completely free to enter! 

Throughout the year, The Box holds a variety of events, many of which are also free, such as storytelling sessions, artist talks, arts and crafts, and more. 

                           

Plymouth Trails App 

The Plymouth Trails App uses real-time maps to guide you on different trails throughout the city. The app is free and can be used offline once downloaded. There are different routes to follow, including the Mayflower Trail, Plymouth’s Powerful Women Trail, and more. 

This is a great way of exploring Plymouth through different eyes and learning about the history of the city through text, images, and video at each stop. 

                           

Elizabethan Gardens 

Tucked away in the heart of The Barbican are the Elizabethan Gardens. The gardens are filled with manicured hedges, colorful flowers, and a tranquil fountain. Free to enter, this is the perfect place to go if you need a little peace and quiet. 

              

Mayflower Museum  

Discover the story of the Mayflower, from the passengers aboard to the legacy that it has left behind in the Mayflower Museum.. You can explore four centuries of history through interactive exhibits, artwork, and stories across four floors. Tickets are affordable, and the museum is suitable for all ages. 

Southwest Coast Path  

Plymouth is conveniently situated on the Southwest Coast Path, the longest of England’s National Trails. The walk takes you from the Cremyll Ferry in Stonehouse all the way to Wembury Beach and beyond. Along the way, there are interesting places to stop, such as the historic Royal William Yard, The Hoe, and the Barbican. This is the perfect way to explore the different scenes of the city and discover the scenic views that Plymouth has to offer, all completely for free. 

                                                        

Experience the benefits of cold-water swimming in Plymouth Sound National Marine Park 

Cold-water swimming has numerous benefits, such as reduced stress levels and improved mental health. It is completely free to do in Plymouth Sound National Marine Park . There are many popular spots perfect for swimming. Park at Devil’s Point car park for free and head down to Firestone Bay. Not only does this spot offer stunning views across the sound, but it also has its own tidal pool, perfect for younger ones to paddle in. 

                    

Dartmoor National Park  

Explore the wilderness of Dartmoor National Park. Just a short drive from Plymouth, this is a fantastic way to spend a day out for free. There are many fantastic places to walk, such as Cadover, Burrator, and the Western Beacon. Many of the walks that you can do offer free parking and range from easy walks perfect to do with the whole family to more difficult hikes, ideal for experienced walkers.  

                           

National Marine Aquarium  

The largest aquarium in the UK, the National Marine Aquarium, is home to over 4,000 animals. From sharks to stingrays, eels to clownfish, there are plenty of species to discover from all over the world. When you buy a ticket to the Aquarium, you get an annual pass for free, meaning you can visit as many times as you like over the course of the year! 

                    

Market Hall 

Home to a 360-degree immersive dome, the Market Hall offers exciting experiences for all ages. The only one of its kind in Europe, the dome offers you the chance to try yoga underneath the aurora lights, learn about dinosaurs, journey through new worlds, and more. The Market Hall offers a variety of tickets, including for under 5s and family tickets. 

                                                        

Events 

Plymouth hosts exciting events throughout the year, all of which are free to attend! You can experience a multitude of different flavors at Flavour Fest, celebrate the sea with a weekend filled with sea-themed entertainment at Seafest, enjoy the firework displays at the British Firework Championships, and much more. They are a great way to keep the whole family entertained without spending a penny!
