Get ready to celebrate Christmas on the cobbles at the Barbican Christmas Lights Switch On on Saturday 16 November!  Prepare for a day of festive fun with activities taking place throughout the afternoon before the lights are switched on in the evening! 

Ahead of the event, get yourself in the festive spirit and check out all you need to know about this year’s Barbican Christmas Lights Switch On.

             

When and where is it? 

The Barbican lights switch-on takes place on Saturday 16 November. There will be activities and traders to explore from 12pm. Then get ready for the main event from 5pm as Santa, the Deputy Lord Mayor, this year’s Community Hero and special guests take to the stage on Southside Street to switch on the lights at approximately 5.15pm. 

                   

What's on during the day? 

There’s plenty of fun to be had throughout the afternoon, with lots of family friendly entertainment and activities to enjoy including the chance to meet Father Christmas at Santa’s Grotto as well as the opportunity to watch the Gables Dog Show. Keep an eye out for the The Grinch who will be playing his usual tricks throughout the day!

Don’t forget to check out the extensive variety of traders who will be selling their homemade goods and crafts throughout the afternoon.

How to get there  

If you’re travelling by car, there’s a number of car parks in the vicinity including Elphinstone car park, Lambhay Hill, Queen Anne’s Battery and the Harbour Car Park at Lockyers Quay, but remember these are likely to be very busy. The car park at Drake Circus and the Barcode is also less than a ten minute walk from all the action.

Road closures 

The Parade/Basket Ope will be closed from 8am to 7pm and Southside Street from 9am to 7pm. 

                 

Is there a charge to visit the event? 

The Barbican Christmas Lights is free to attend although traders and Santa's Grotto will incur charges.

                      

How do I nominate someone for the Community Hero award?

The Community Hero award is given to someone who has gone the extra mile to support their community throughout the year. In recognition of their efforts, the chosen winner will have the honour of joining Santa, this year's special guest and the Deputy Lord Mayor on stage to switch on the lights. Submit the Community Hero nomination form by Friday 8 November to get your nominee the opportunity to win this year's award.

              

What other events are taking place around the waterfront?

There's plenty of fun to be had around the waterfront as well as the switch on event. From iconic venues such as Plymouth Gin to festive events including the Festival of Trees, there's loads to check out beside the water.
