Summer in Plymouth. There's nowhere quite like it. The sun is shining, the water is shimmering and there are plenty of amazing events happening in and around the city.

If you're visiting this summer and after some inspiration of some of the fun you can get up to in the city this month, take a look at some of our top recommendations. We've shortlisted 10 for you:

                 

Go for a dip in Tinside Lido

One of the UK's most iconic lidos is back open for the summer season! Situated on the waterfront just a stone's throw from Smeaton's Tower, the saltwater Tinside Lido is a great way to refresh from the summer sun.

The Lido can get quite busy, therefore it is advised you book in advance their website to avoid disappointment. It's open every day from 10am until 6pm (Mondays it closes at 7pm) so there is ample opportunity to plunge into the pool this month.

Marvel at the British Firework Championships

An August in Plymouth would not be complete without the iconic British Firework Championships, in partnership with Associated British Ports. Taking place on 14 and 15 August on Plymouth Hoe, prepare to be amazed as firework companies from across the country battle it out over two nights to be crowned this year's champion.

There are more than just fireworks displays to get excited about on the evening with a fairground packed with rides opening from 2pm as well as loads of tasty food vendors on site. As the sun begins to dip beyond the horizon look out for the fire performers on the Hoe who will be taking on some daredevil stunts to add to the fun!

There's a packed programme of live music scheduled for across the evening starting from 5pm so there's plenty to keep you occupied before the fireworks begin!

                  

Rock on at live music concerts

Music lovers will love the return of the Big Tribute Festival and Live in the Park Music Festival in Central Park this summer.

The Big Tribute Festival promises three days of fun starting on 9 August with tributes to Abba, Queen Take That, Ed Sheeran and more set to take centre stage before Live in the Park kicks off on 14 August promising even more live performances including an 80s night, an Ibiza day and George Michael Tribute night!

                

Explore the city with Plymouth Trails

You can explore the city this month with the Plymouth Trails App. The free-to-download app is packed with plenty of themed trails to download which will take you on various routes across Plymouth.

Learn more about fascinating areas such as Sutton Harbour or discover some of the key figures in Plymouth's past with the Plymouth's Powerful Women Trail. The trails are a fantastic family day out and are a must this summer!

                 

Discover the stunning grounds of Saltram House

Escape the buzz of city life with a visit to the tranquil grounds of Saltram House. Situated just a short drive from the city centre, the gorgeous house and pristine gardens are a great way to make the most of the summer sunshine.

                  

Visit the West End Carnival

Get in the carnival spirit this August when the West End Carnival rolls into Plymouth city centre's West End on Saturday 24 August!

Prepare to marvel at the colourful spectacle as the parade marches through the streets of the West End. The family-friendly occasion is a day of free fun, look out for activities around the streets, performances throughout the day and the Ash the smoke-breathing dragon who will be soaring around the area.

Visit the city's award-winning museum

Rain or shine there is always something to see and learn about at The Box Museum. The award-winning museum is and is home to a wide array of fascinating artefacts from the city's past.

Discover a full-size replica woolly mammoth, wonderful works of art, amazing archive film and photography, and fascinating documents, maps and plans plus more at the free-to-enter attraction just a short walk from the city centre.

The Box hosts regular exhibitions throughout the year and their latest ones are a must-visit including The Time Is Always Now which showcases some of the finest names in contemporary art as well as Planet Ocean which celebrates our connection with the ocean.

                           

Head out on a shopping spree

Embark on a shopping spree in Plymouth this summer. There are plenty of venues to explore throughout the city this month, discover the biggest high-street names at Drake Circus, the city's largest shopping centre home to more than 70 outlets.

There are independent shops on offer at Plymouth Market, where you can find everything from unique gifts to tasty street food! Explore further niche gifts at The Barbican, home to cobbled streets and quaint boutiques the historic area is packed with atmosphere and quirky venues to shop at including Plymouth Gin Distillery, the oldest of its kind in the country.

Explore the Royal William Yard

Plymouth's Royal William Yard is among the city's most glamorous waterfront locations. The largest collection of Grade 1 listed military buildings in Europe was formerly owned by the Royal Navy in days gone by.

Now it is an impressive area to explore in the city with its gargantuan monuments and striking buildings, it is a hive of activity throughout the summer with free events happening every weekend during the holidays.

Furthermore, there's a free geo trail here to help you explore the area, and if you get peckish, the yard is home to restaurants and bars aplenty. Being so close to the sea, it's easy to head out onto the water from here, with paddleboarding and wild-swimming opportunities available from here.
