When the US joined the WWII allied campaign, many American troops were stationed and billeted in Plymouth.
Led by an expert historical guide this walking tour will give you a glimpse of life as it was for a GI in Plymouth as they prepared for the critical D-Day landings.
The Town of Stonehouse was sandwiched between Devonport (Dock) and Plymouth (Sutton Harbour).
Over time the towns grew in size and the boarders met and finally the three towns amalgamated to form the City of Plymouth.
Stonehouse has its own character and famed for its rich naval history and architecture in its own right. Namely the Royal William Yard 1827-32, by Sir John Rennie, Sir Robert Taylor's Longroom 1752, The Royal Marine Barracks, the oldest purpose built barracks in the country 1780-5, by Parlby and Templar, The Royal Naval Hospital, by Alexander Rovehead 1758-65, and even a bridge designed by the famous Sir John Smeaton, all of which still survive in the area of Stonehouse.
But the most famous for its notoriety is a world famous street...Union Street, conceived by another famous architect Sir John Foulston, in the early 18th century to link the three towns together. It soon became the place to visit when coming to Plymouth. For fun, adventure, it's nightlife, for it was lined with pubs and cider houses, theatres cinemas, and earned a reputation that still lingers to this day long after it's demise.
So, come and visit Stonehouse and learn of its legacy and its rightful place in the history of the naval port of Plymouth, from Naval heroes, Royalty, and theatrical stars like Houdini ....
