Portsmouth, Hampshire

"A Taste of England Tours" Julia Morris Blue Badge Guide, MITG
The idyllic country villages of Hampshire and the great maritime ports of Portsmouth and Southampton played a vital role in the preparations and launch of D-Day. From November 1943 the county became part of a massive military training depot as British, U.S. and Allied troops assembled across southern England.
This full day tour combines panoramic guided tours to Southwick village and the New Forest with visits to the superb D-Day Museum and Southwick House. You will hear revealing stories of the impact upon the local community of the presence of Eisenhower and Montgomery’s command teams and experience locations that still give an authentic feel of the human endeavours that enabled the greatest combined amphibious operation in history to take place in June 1944.
The Highlights:
- A full day tour led by your very own local Blue Badge Guide with private transport.
- Discover fascinating accounts of bravery, endeavour and innovation amongst the artefacts on display at the D-Day Museum Portsmouth. Your Blue Badge Guide will uncover the stories behind the evocative D-Day embroidery and LC7404, the last D day tank landing craft to survive, rescued and conserved for display at the Museum.
- Enjoy commanding views on a guided tour to Southwick House to visit the map room where the plans for D-day were coordinated and General Eisenhower gave the command ‘Let’s Go!’.
- Lunch at the traditional pub where Eisenhower’s officers relaxed and socialised in the months before D-day.
- Explore the New Forest on a panoramic tour of the National Park’s D-Day sites including Lepe Beach, Beaulieu airfield and Brockenhurst.
