From Plymouth you will be taken to Upottery where you will be provided with local tea/coffee/biscuits. Our Expert Guide will detail the stories of 101st Airborne at Upottery Airfield. Here you will see the original Nissen Huts which were used by the 101st pre D-day. You can look around the Airborne Museum and hear about their heroic missions and battles in the D-day landings.
Drive down the runway where these brave young paratroopers took off before being dropped behind the enemy lines in Normandy France on the morning of 6th June 1944 – D-day. Then and now photo opportunities provided.
Take part in your own party’s American flag raising ceremony which is accompanied by an emotional roll call of the Easy Company paratroopers’ names who were tragically killed on D-day along with the Band of Brothers theme tune.
We then travel to Dunkerswell Aerodrome which is the only surviving US Navy land base in WWII in Europe. It was originally built as an RAF Fighter Command Airfield in WWII, but was handed over in 1943 to the US Navy for the battle of The Atlantic, where they flew Liberator Bombers to destroy Nazi U-boats in the Bay of Biscay. One famous pilot who flew numerous missions from the base was Joseph Kennedy Junior, brother of John F. Kennedy the future President of the United States of America. Sadly, Joseph lost his life on a mission in August 1944. Traditional English lunch will be provided in the Aviator Restaurant at Dunkerswell Aerodrome.
We then drive to Slapton Sands to see and hear a tragic story told by our expert guide of one of the biggest hidden secrets of WWII which resulted in the loss of up to 1000 US Military personnel whilst training on Operation Tiger – 27th and 28th April 1944 in the build up to the D-Day landings. Hear the story of 101st Airborne who were also there on these tragic days. Then and now photo opportunities available. Traditional Devonshire cream tea provided at Slapton Sands.
We then travel back to Plymouth to see where the American Military Base was situated at Normandy Hill pre and post D-day. Walk down the US Army’s Route 23 to Saltash Passage where the 5th and 7th Corps embarked their ships for their final journey to Utah and Omaha beaches on D-Day.
Photo opportunity will also be provided at The Mayflower Steps in The Barbican, Plymouth at the end of the tour.
