Britain's Best Heritage Tours
A 2.5 km walk which starts and ends at the Boat Float, on Dartmouth’s scenic waterfront. The walk takes in the historic highlights of Dartmouth including the Butterwalk, Bayard’s Cove Castle (where the fleets gathered for the first and second crusades back in the Middle Ages), St Saviour’s Church and a view of Britannia Royal Naval College (above the point in the estuary where the Mayflower and Speedwell anchored for the second - but not final - departure for the New World).
At the end of the walk we transfer into our luxury vehicle and take the scenic 30 minute drive via Blackpool Sands (and an opportunity to pick up an award-winning coffee) to Slapton Sands, and Torcross with its memorial to Operation Tiger, one of World War II’s dark secrets. We take the opportunity to visit the village and memorial before moving on to Start Point – one of the finest viewpoints in the country – where ‘Instagram moments’ abound. With any luck there will be seals and, possibly, dolphins.
The Highlights:
- The Dart Estuary – beautiful seafront and bustling harbour – anchorage for the Mayflower
- St Saviour’s Church; 14th century with original ironwork on the door and a real-life connection to Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales. Bayard’s Cove Fort, built at the time of Henry VIII
- Scenic drive along stunning coast and through pretty villages. The view from Start Point.
- Visit Torcross and hear of its tragic World War II secret.
- Discover the area in the company of a local expert.
