The Mayflower Pilgrim Roots Tour brings together expert historians, costumed interpretation and costumed tour guides, with the five key sites linked to the main characters and story of the origins of the separatist movement in north Nottinghamshire, South Yorkshire and West Lincolnshire.
The Highlights:
- Visit to Babworth Church with costumed interpretation from Mayflower separatist preacher/ pilgrim- Richard Clifton was curate from 1586 until 1604. He had a great influence on the foundation of the Pilgrim movement. William Brewster and William Bradford were regular attendees of his services; the footpath to the church from their homes is known as the Pilgrims' Way.
- Visit to Austerfield Church - William Bradford, the first governor of Massachusetts was baptised here. The Baptismal font can be seen at the church. An expert guided tour of the church is provided.
- Visit to Gainsborough Old Hall - Some of the Separatists are thought to have worshipped clandestinely at Gainsborough Old Hall - now regarded as one of the best-preserved medieval manor houses in Britain - with the permission of its sympathetic owner, merchant William Hickman.
- Expert commentary as the tour travels through villages associated with the Mayflower Pilgrims including Scrooby - William Brewster who was brought up in Scrooby. Inspired by the radical words of Richard Clifton, the rector of nearby All Saints'; Church, Babworth, Brewster is believed to have founded a Separatist Church in his family home at Scrooby manor house. The tour passes by All Saints’ Church where Richard Clifton was parson from 1586 until 1605.
