Spot the moorland ponies, cattle and sheep which roam freely on this heather strewn moor before descending to Tavistock, ancient stannary town, now part of the UNESCO West Devon Mining World Heritage Site.
Visit the fascinating exhibition in the Dartmoor National Park Visitor Centre and stroll around the village of Princetown, the largest and highest village on the moor, and enjoy a Ploughman's lunch or Devon Cream Tea at a local hotel before returning to Plymouth.
Owned by the Duchy of Cornwall, the tall, grey granite walls of Dartmoor Prison, with its long history stretching back to the C18th, dominate and provide contrast to the wide open tracts of land and rolling hills that will be seen as ou transverse the moor.
