The strategically important naval City of Plymouth became a main target for bombing raids in WWll and was also an important base for US servicemen in the build-up to the D Day Landings. On this
tour, the blitz of Plymouth in March and April 1941 will be recounted, with astonishing evidence of the ferocity of the attack that can still be seen in the buildings and memorials. The remains of the 17th
Century Charles Cross Church, the now rebuilt St Andrews Church and the Guildhall will also be seen, as well as the location of American servicemen camps where you can hear the stories of the
young local lads who lived nearby.
It will then be on to Ford Park Cemetery to see the memorial to the 1000+ civilian war dead, and further astonishing evidence of the bombing, before leaving the City to Yelverton and the old WWll
fighter base where Eisenhower and Truman landed whilst visiting, to Saltash passage where tens of thousands of US troops departed for the D day landings.
Finally, a visit to Cornwall and Mount Edgcumbe, where many of the roads were originally built by the US Servicemen in those days leading up to the D-Day landings in June 1944.
