Development Stage 6 – Complete
The Box, opened in May 2020, is Plymouth's new £46 million cultural destination, proudly led by Plymouth City Council in Britain's Ocean City.
It is a major new visitor attraction and unique historic archive and learning space for the city which will support the regeneration of the North Hill / Tavistock Plan cultural quarter. As well as a museum, gallery and archive, it includes a cafe, shop and bar.
The opening of The Box was one of the most significant cultural events in the UK in 2020. The galleries, collections and archives bring the world to Plymouth and Plymouth to the world. The original Museum and Art Gallery has been completely transformed and extended to combine the Edwardian building with the former City Library and St Luke’s church buildings. The Box also features a striking elevated ‘archive in the sky’ with research and learning facilities, along with a major new public square for performances and events.
Tavistock Place is now closed to through traffic to form a public piazza, with new pedestrian and cycling links through to North Hill and Chapel Street.
This site forms part of the wider site PLY18 which includes:
• PLY18 Land at Tavistock Place / Chapel Street – Feasibility
