Plymouth: one of the world's most underrated destinations
What, exactly, makes a destination underrated? Are we talking about places that don’t regularly appear on top travel lists? Places that don’t get their fair share of tourism? Places that are legitimate hidden gems, off-the-tourist-trail, or offer great (or quiet) alternatives to popular spots in the same region?
According to global magazine Time Out, Plymouth ranks seventh in the most underrated travel destinations in the world. This is what they have to say:
"We love to sing the praises of obscure and overlooked places here at Time Out. So when we started to think about the most underrated travel destinations in the world, a lot of places sprung to mind. After a lot of umming and ahhing, we decided that one city right here in the UK was worthy of a spot in the top 14, and we would urge you to start thinking about planning a trip ASAP.
The Devon city of Plymouth is bursting with culture and history, is right next to the sea and has plenty of quality local food and drink, as well as some picturesque places to rest your head. But it’s also relatively overlooked. That’s why we ranked it the seventh most underrated place to visit in the world, alongside the likes of Cuenca in Ecuador, Turku in Finland and Mongolia.
If you’re an art lover, check out The Box: a brilliant, recently opened gallery that celebrates local artists. If you’re an architecture buff, wander around by the newly done-up Market Hall, which also has its own ‘immersive art dome’. For travellers who like to stay active, few pools are more spectacular than the Tinside Lido. And for a drink as the sun goes down? England’s oldest distillery is smack bang in the historic city centre."
